Amazon debuts Alexa+, a smarter but potentially cheaper assistant

Goodbye Old Alexa and your solid interactions of him. On Wednesday, Amazon introduced a new and improved Alexa+voice assistant that acts more as a man, thanks to the progress in the generation.

At an event in New York, the company demonstrated Alexa+, riding it as a voice assistant that understands the nuances of natural human conversation. In a demonstration, Amazon showed Alexa+ speaking through a smart screen of Echo Show 21, and sounding more as an influential Tiktok than a monotonous voice assistant.

“She’s smarter than she used to be. But it is also approachable, which is so important, “said Panos Panay, Amazon’s head for equipment and services.” This intimidation factor is gone. It is useful. It can plan a date, reserve the restaurant and write the site. “

But Alexa+ will only be free if you are a subscriber of Amazon Prime. Otherwise you can expect to pay $ 19.99 a month for access.

“Alexa+ will start leaving the US in the coming weeks, and then in waves in the coming months starting with families with Echo Show 8, 10, 15 and 21,” the company added. “If you still don’t have one of these devices, you can buy one today to be among the first to have early access to Alexa+ after it is available.”

The company has updated Alexa using not one, but a whole collection of the latest big -language models for what is called an “agnostic model system”. The result means that Alexa+ can choose from some models to meet the user’s request.

It also means the reconstructed digital assistant promises to have a wide range of skills, including the ability to remember and act according to your preferences. In a demonstration, the company indicated that Alexa+ can also use the camera of an ECHO device to get to know its surroundings and the crowd at the New York event.

In addition, the improved voice assistant is smart enough to transmit music from one smart speaker to another if you ask him to “play music up” or “play music everywhere, but don’t wake the baby”.

Like his other generating programs, Alexa+ can put memories and search through any document or email you have shared to quickly provide a summary or to request the desired information. This may involve help you find out what your HoA guidelines say for solar panels, the company said as an example.

Amazon’s leaders admitted that previous versions of Alexa offered a hit or miss experience. The sound assistant, which is embedded in the smart Echo devices, can suffer from difficult and solid interactions as it cannot always understand the full context of a command or requirement.

As a result, many users have addressed “Alexa speak”, carefully formulating their requests for Amazon’s voice assistant, rather than using natural languages, Panay said. But this has changed everything with the advent of him.

“Every time a time a technology comes around and it literally changes everything. Creating it and chatbots has shocked everything,” he said.

The company plans to issue an early entry into Alexa+ next month. Amazon added to a blog post: “You can also use Alexa+ wherever you want, from your favorite ECHO devices and Alexa Mobile app on a new online browser experience.”
